A good contract is not paperwork for decoration. It gives the reader a scoreboard. No feelings. Separate bedrooms. One year only. No questions about the past. Public affection allowed, private attachment forbidden. The clearer the line, the more satisfying it feels when the characters step across it.

The important point is consent. The arrangement can be pressured by circumstances, but the romance should not pretend coercion is tenderness. Readers need to see both characters gaining agency as the relationship changes.

The strongest scenes do more than create embarrassment. They show who protects whom when the performance becomes dangerous.

A hand at the waist, a corrected insult, a shared bedroom, or a public kiss matters because it changes the balance. The fake spouse becomes the person who sees what others miss.

The ending works when the choice outgrows the contract

The contract should not simply expire and leave love as the only option. The most satisfying ending gives both characters a chance to walk away with dignity. They choose each other because the relationship has become freer and more honest than the bargain that created it.

That is the promise of the trope: rules create the container, but repeated care turns the arrangement into a real partnership.
